Brolio / The Pitch 2014

It’s not too late to book a free place at the CIM annual ‘Brolio / The Pitch’ evening event, taking place at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on 18 February 2014.

During the afternoon, 12 teams of three students each, from higher education and further education colleges throughout Wales, compete in the nearby Pierhead Building. These are narrowed down by the judges to three finalists teams who present in the evening. This event is a great opportunity for students to work on a ‘real world’ project and for businesses in Wales to see the high quality of marketing students in Wales.

The brief this year is supplied by Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales. The Welsh Government are sponsoring the event as part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Strategy (YES) Action plan 2010-15, which encourages youth entrepreneurship and business to engage with education. The National Assembly buildings provide an excellent platform to host this prestigious competition, increasing the profile of the competition with the business audience and the young participants.

Book recommendations

Valuable Content Marketing

I can recommend the new book by Sonja Jefferson and Sharon Tanton, ‘Valuable Content Marketing’ that argues for focusing marketing effort on creating genuinely valuable content in order to achieve results.

It’s a helpful – and common sense – practical guide, with chapters include ‘What is valuable content and why it wins you business’, ‘Distribute your valuable content using social media’, ‘Add deeper written content’ and ‘Widen your reach’.

It’s available from the CIM bookshop where it’s also the CIM’s book of the month.

Wales Marketing Awards

The Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in Wales are a celebration of excellence in ideas and execution. The Institute is committed to raising the profile and quality of marketing in Wales and wants to celebrate and promote the best of marketing in Wales.

The awards are open to everyone in Wales, from sole traders to multinational companies. There’s an emphasis on the fact that marketing extends beyond “the four Ps”. There are no campaign categories such as ‘best PR’ or ‘best direct mail’ recognising that modern marketing in Wales is about looking for the best integrated marketing that helps the organisation meet objectives, rather than specific advertising and PR campaigns.

It’s free to enter, please visit the Canmol website for more information and guidance on how to submit an application. The deadline for entries is 31 July 2013 with the Awards ceremony itself in Cardiff on Friday 4 October 2013.
