Very interesting initiative being tried at English National Opera – ‘secret seats’. The idea is simple – buy a £20 unallocated seat in advance and be guaranteed a seat worth £25 or more on the night, confirmed three days prior to performance. Will be interesting to see how this works in practice.
Most similar thing already in existence is at Kings Place who offer a £9.50 unallocated seat which is allocated by the Box Office on the day of performance. But the ENO version is very different in such a huge auditorium with so many price breaks and seating options. It’s also a higher-profile example and is being presented in the media as being part of ENO’s plan to ‘redress a financial deficit in the face of further arts cuts’.
